KOURION The ancient city of Kourion, perched high on a cliff top overlooking the Mediterranean, was once a centre of cultural and religious life. The town was founded in the twelfth century BC. The Roman theatre, built in the second century AD, is magnificently situated and is still in use today. Next to it are the mosaics of the Baths, part of a private residence from the fourth century AD. The setting and the history combine beautifully for an unforgettable excursion. KOLOSSI CASTLE This medieval castle, dating to the 1200s, belonged to the Knights of St. John. Here, they began producing wine and processing sugar cane. The result is the birth of the famous Cypriot wine Commadaria. You enter this three-storey structure by a drawbridge and are instantly transported back centuries as you explore this treasure. SANCTUARY OF APOLLO HYLATES This shrine, which dates to the seventh century BC, was in honour of the sun-god, Apollo in his role as “Hylates”, god of the forest. The current site was in use until the fourth century AD. The standing columns mark the restoration of the area. Other spaces to explore are the baths, the priests’ quarters and the sporting arena. THE CITY OF LIMASSOL Our beautiful city is the centre of trade and historic sites in Limassol, as well as being home to the largest harbour in Cyprus. Its location and the warmth of the people mean it’s a natural venue for a year-round calendar of celebrations, and its seaside promenade makes it easily accessible for exploring. LIMASSOL MEDIAEVAL CASTLE Richard the Lionheart was married in the chapel on this location in 1191. The current castle, built in the fourteenth century, offers much to explore, including coats of arms, carvings and reliefs, as well as a museum situated through a series of chambers. ANCIENT AMATHOUS This ancient trading centre was built between the tenth and eighth centuries BC. It was the island’s first city-state. Located along the coast, here you can still see remains of the aqueduct as well as columns of the agora (marketplace).
